An Introduction to Tolly

Tolly was founded in 1895 by William Dixon Cruickshank as an equestrian and horse racing Club. The land was partly acquired and partly leased from Prince Gholam Mohammad Shah, son of Tipu Sultan of Mysore. Prior to the Tipu Sultan family, the land (and what is now the Club house) was the garden house of the Johnson family. The club is named after Colonel William Tolly, who excavated the canal behind the boundary wall of the Club.

Over the years the Club has evolved well beyond equestrian activity and is regarded and ranked as one of the top 20 country Clubs in the world. The club offers several sporting facilities ranging from the original equestrian activity to an 18-hole golf course, tennis, squash, swimming, table tennis, billiards, bridge and various other indoor games. The Club is spread over 110 acres and has a diverse mix of trees of local varieties and plants brought here from Europe. The Club is home to many different species of local and migratory birds. The wide variety of flora and fauna makes the landscape of the Club look serene and scenic.

The club offers its members a wide range of facilities, like a fine-dining experience, restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, open air/ covered serviced areas for members to relax and socialize, shops/ convenio stores/ brand outlets, and an excellent library offering the readers a diverse collection of books and literature covering a wide spectrum of genres and languages. The Club has 67 well-equipped, luxurious rooms for members and guests to stay and enjoy a relaxing experience in an oasis of greenery. The Club offers many indoor and outdoor facilities for members to host both meetings and social events.

There is also the Tolly Pro Shop that offers members different Club memorabilia like ties, tee shirts, caps, lapel pins, golf mementoes, books on the history of the Club and more.

Ethos and Culture of the Club

Tolly is a sports-centric family Club where families often spend the entire day relaxing while using the different facilities the Club has to offer. This makes the Club a second home to members.

The staff of the Club have a strong emotional bond with the Club. This makes them serve the members with utmost sincerity and commitment to ensure that every member feels cared for. Some of our staff are even fourth-generation staff serving the Club with the same dedication as their predecessors. Members and staff tend to know each other very well. They treat each other with affection and mutual respect, and care about each other’s families. Together, members and staff comprise the community of Tolly

The ethos and spirit of Tolly is characterized by camaraderie and harmony among members. Members, and indeed their families, build life-long friendships with each other at Tolly. This is what makes Tolly particularly unique and special.

Tolly members are careful to enjoy the Club responsibly while respecting the privacy of all fellow members and without disturbing the enjoyment of any other member.

Members are conscious of the fact that every member is equal in this community and enjoy each other’s company as peers sharing common interests. No member seeks any special privilege and members make it a point not to flaunt their external social/ professional position or standing within the Club. Tipping individual staff members is therefore strictly against the ethos of the Club, for one family member would not seek superior service at home over other family members!

Some members enjoy the Club to the fullest. They plan a weekend and book a room at the Tolly Towers or decide to stay in one the cottages. The day begins with a morning walk or a horse ride followed by a refreshing swim. The hunger generated by the swim is satiated fully by the famous Tolly breakfast at the gravel area or the Shamiana while taking in the ambience of the Club environment. If one is interested in sports, the wide array of facilities can be used. A sumptuous lunch at our continental fine dining facility – Belvedere – provides a perfect round-up of the morning session. The library is often a preferred companion for many of our members to spend the afternoon whilst others may prefer to have a nap in the cozy comfort of their rooms. The evening may see a few playing a sport, while others may prefer enjoying a hot steaming cup of tea or coffee enjoying the greenery while sitting at the South Verandah or the Gravel Area / Shamiana. The Club often hosts cultural programs which give members an opportunity to unwind in the evenings. While the elders enjoy the Club in their own ways, the children are not far behind – they have an equally enjoyable day, interacting with other children at the playground or swimming pool or at the several sports facilities.

Tolly has been a haven for children for more than a hundred years. Generations of children have grown up at Tolly. Apart from their home and school, Tolly has been the third place where children have spent a large part of their growing up hours. They have also learnt from the multi-cultural environment of the Club and have evolved to become individuals who are respectful and tolerant to diversity. Tolly loves children and is committed to being a fun place for children to grow up in. Tolly is also committed to imparting sports skills to children. Many of our members’ children have grown up to be International, National and State level players in several disciplines like Equestrian, Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Billiards, Squash etc. We have geared and equipped our sports facilities to support best in class training facilities to our members’ children. An integral part of the ethos at Tolly, over the years has also been to keep Tolly a child friendly place.

Tolly is a truly cosmopolitan Club. We welcome and embrace diversity. We have members of many different nationalities who reside all over the world. Many of them are frequent visitors and come to India primarily to spend time at Tolly and experience the warmth of its belief in inclusiveness and diversity. Our permanent resident membership base is equally diverse and is a glowing example of the Indian ethos of “Unity in Diversity”. Our diversity of membership is an important dimension of our culture and drives many of our decisions around our social and cultural programmes, our initiatives and activities, our cuisine options and indeed even our architectural and design standards. We respect the fact that every individual member is unique and therefore believe in respecting their diverse values, needs and expectations.

Being an institution that has sustained more than a century and a quarter, we have a rich heritage to preserve. We blend our heritage with modernity and remain an institution that is distinguished and progressive.

Our commitment to the environment is very strong. We preserve and nurture our green cover and continue to plant dozens of trees every year. We have implemented a ground water harvesting system that recycles our water for use in watering our grounds and gardens. We do not use plastic bottles or plastic containers or bags for our take-away services or for other purposes at the Club. We have installed a solar energy system for heating our swimming pool. We use organic fertilizers as much as possible for nurturing our grounds and gardens.

Our members are very particular about keeping our grounds and gardens litter free. We are also committed to keeping our grounds and gardens as natural as possible and minimizing any form of construction. Where we have Shamianas and other structures, we try to ensure that the structures blend in with the natural surrounds. We believe in blending nature with development so that we do not create any ecological imbalance.

Apart from horses, Tolly is also home to many small animals and birds. Tolly is the natural habitat for several jackals. These jackal families have been here since long before the Club started. They are protected by law. It is our responsibility to co-exist peacefully with them. The Club provides food for the jackals and this helps to mitigate potential aggression. Our horses and ponies are a huge draw for children. Not just for the children who ride, but many more who like to visit the stables to spend time with the horses.

Tolly is not just a second home for the members but is also the second home for four-legged family members of our members. Our members are very often seen visiting the Club with their four-legged family members. Many dogs look forward to visiting Tolly as much as members do. The Club and the members are both sensitively respectful to this co-existence. We even have an annual pet show where members bring and showcase their pets. Prizes are diverse and include prizes for the most lovable pets.

Tolly is also home to many stray dogs and cats. Many of them were unfortunately abandoned at the Club premises. The law of the land is very strict about how such animals are treated, and mandates that such animals may not be evicted or relocated and may not be kept in confinement. The Club ensures that each of these animals are neutered and vaccinated. These dogs and cats are much loved by many children and members and have been companions of many members for generations. We are an animal-friendly Club.

In keeping up with the reputation of Tolly being one of the top 20 country Clubs in the world, there is a continuous strive to achieve excellence in governance, management, facilities and service. We dream to achieve “Experience Excellence” for all our stakeholders.

Governance and Management

The club is governed by an elected Board, named the General Committee (GC). The GC holds office for a year. The GC is headed by the President, who is supported by the Vice President. By convention, the immediate Past President is a co-opted member of the GC. The GC is also empowered to co-opt additional members subject to a ceiling.

The GC appoints several sub-committees to provide advisory inputs across the different areas of club operations.

The club is managed by the CEO and team (management) who are directly responsible for running the club operations.

The GC sets policies, provides advisory inputs to the CEO, appoints the CEO and management and holds the management accountable for performance. The GC has the responsibility of setting the vision and providing stewardship towards attainment of that vision.

Whilst the GC is elected by the members, the tradition of the club has largely been that the outgoing GC recommends the incoming GC to the members. At times, members outside the GC offer to serve the club on the GC. In such a circumstance, a ballot is held at the AGM. It is the ethos of the club, that under such circumstances, no member of the club would indulge in any divisive conduct whatsoever

The President and Vice President are recommended to the members for election by the GC. Under the articles of association of the club, there is no contest for the post of President and Vice-President. By convention, the term of the President is one year, and it is similar for the Vice-President.

Rules and Regulations

The rules and regulations of the club are coded in the Articles of Association and in the By-Laws of the club.

In keeping with the culture and tradition of the club, members are themselves extremely conscious and particular to follow any rules that have been put in place. Our members do not need to be reminded of the rules.

In general, Tolly being a sports-centric family club, the club is informal and tries to minimize the imposition of rules and regulations through hawk-eye monitoring. It relies far more on self-regulation by members in following etiquette and desired codes of conduct. Interacting with fellow members and staff with utmost courtesy.

Always preserve and nurture the golf course.
