Riding

Tollygunge Club probably has the oldest riding club in the country and currently has 40 horses in its stables. The Club was a serious racing centre till 1984 and used to boast of a private racecourse. However, despite the fading away of the races, the enthusiasm amongst members for riding remains undiminished with over 150 regular riders, both young and adult, enjoying the rectangular riding ring. The refurbished stables add to the charm of the place, which is unique in that it is the only place in Kolkata where people can be properly trained to ride. The club riders have performed well in competitions and shows. The Club’s young riders even have had the honour of representing the country abroad in show jumping dressage and have also won several accolades, including laurels, at the Junior National Equestrian Championships. The Club is also the perfect venue for annual horse shows, a spectacular equestrian event traditionally held in winter.
